Poetry of Stephanie Bennett Henry

Lesson in the Stars

It’s okay to sit with the pain

for as long as you need to.

Sometimes we have to get

on our knees, carve out every

ounce of pain from old wounds

until it hurts us again and again

and only then when we soak up

the reason from fresh blood

do we understand exactly

what the lesson was for.

And understand, that sometimes

it was simply for you to see yourself

in the dark, so you can recognize

a new version of you that is capable

of shining bright enough

to bust the dark to pieces.

And now you don’t question

how the stars were made.
